In addition to wetting down the walkways, moisture was critical to soften the rock hard clumps of clay and thankfully the amount of rain received last week has done its job. Although we have placed wood shavings on a good part of the east half of the garden, the west half is as yet uncovered. We're now working to un-clod the clay which will create a better base on which to lay the shavings. Here are some photos showing how we started, the second phase of levelling out, and the third phase of breaking up the clay. You can now see how we are moving towards a shape where planting is possible (albeit not until next spring)
ROUGH START-BEFORE ANY LEVELLING (look at the beds to either side of the pathway)
It's been a mountain of work and the beds have been done entirely by hand. Most will not understand the amount of labour that went into the bed preparation but creating a good nutrient rich base is critical to future success.
More to come. Stay tuned!
