UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE RIGHT TO FOOD, OLIVIER DE SCHUTTER REPORTS ON PRESENTATION TO UNITED NATIONS COUNCIL ON HUMAN RIGHTS-LIVE FROM GENEVA SWITZERLAND TO RIPLEY, ONTARIO
The people in attendance represented a variety of organizations from all across Bruce, Grey, Wellington, and Huron Counties whose interest was very specific and relevant to the topic, and who are currently very engaged at the community level. Represented were municipal and provincial government representatives and assistants, First Nations, the Grey Bruce Health Unit, poverty reduction organizations, farm organizations, farmers, doctors, and interested individuals.
It would be a shame to see the momentum created by Mr. De Schutter's presentation wane in the shadow of the monumental task we have ahead of us to enlighten government agencies and representatives on the reality experienced by the food challenged and the many organizations that work diligently to try to improve the situation. As such, we have taken steps to keep the parties engaged. On our Food Security and Local Food page, we have set up a resource room for documents on food security and a survey to be taken by the participants and their associates. Through this sharing, we can develop a clear understanding of what parts of the system are working, what parts are broken, what are the hurdles to success, and how we see ourselves working together.
It became very clear that there was a strong concern among organizations around the levels of food insecurity the country is experiencing and a dedication to work on solutions. We will try to use this website, blog, and digital media to bring parties from distant areas together in discussion. Please stay tuned!
